Heisman Scholarship for High school students

The Heisman award was first won in 1935 by the Downtown Athletic Club, DAC in New York City. It a privately owned recreation facility located on the lower west side near the later World Trade Center site. The award was then known as the DAC Trophy.

Jay Berwanger, who was the first winner was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but declined to sign for them. It was reported that He never played professional football for any team. John Heisman died in 1936 and the trophy was renamed in his honor. Larry Kelley became the second to win the DAC award and the first to win the Heisman Trophy.

Lots of Heisman trophies have been sold since its existence. However, restriction has been placed on the sale of the trophies, allowing only recently awarded trophies to be sold.
Some of these trophies are sold at a high cost. Yale end Larry Kelley sold his 1936 Heisman in December 1999 for $328,110. Charles White’s 1979 trophy was first sold for $184,000 and then for nearly $300,000 in December 2006.
Paul Hornung sold his for $250,000 to endow student scholarships for University of Notre Dame students from his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Heisman scholarship rules and regulations

The Heisman Scholarship program has some rules and regulations you need to know. They are;

  1. The Heisman High school scholarship honor is awarded to state, national winners and national finalists.
  2. Awardee of the Scholarship must plan for full time enrollment of a minimum of 12 hours per semester.
  3. The Scholarship fund is only be used for education and educational related expenses.
  4. Heisman scholarship is open to all American institution. This means that winners can attend any accredited institution in the States.
  5. Scholarship award token will be paid in a single instalment for a full academic year.
  6. Scholarship fund can be deferred to later time if the recipient choose to delay schooling in favor of military service.
  7. Funds can be forfeited if the recipient fails to enroll as at when due. However, there is consideration if the recipient is bereaved, sick or as the case may be.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Entrants must be a proven leader within their school and community.
  • Applicants must maintain a 3.0 weighted GPA.
