The Heisman award was first won in 1935 by the Downtown Athletic Club, DAC in New York City. It a privately owned recreation facility located on the lower west side near the later World Trade Center site. The award was then known as the DAC Trophy.
Jay Berwanger, who was the first winner was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but declined to sign for them. It was reported that He never played professional football for any team.
