Interior Design As A Profession
There are different paths an individual can take to become a professional interior designer, most of these paths involve one form of training or the other.
Learning under a successful professional interior designer which is known as apprenticeship has been previously the most common method of education. As the world evolved, many institutions started offering interior design as a course of study.
In essence, before you practice interior designing in the United States, you need to undergo thorough training through an approved institution such as; an art or design school, University or college.
After the completion of your study, you’ll be issued a certificate after which you can proceed to get your license to practice.
In most universities across the globe, several interior architecture degree courses are now available, which take a period of three or four years to complete.
Most of the course materials are prepared by professional interior designers with field experience, these materials meet the minimum standard of excellence. Therefore, giving the students a high standard of education.
There are also PhD programs for university graduates, these programs are specifically for those seeking further training in a particular design specialization (i.e. healthcare design or gerontological) or those wishing to lecture in the university level.
New York School of Interior Design
New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is a private college that was founded by Sherrill Whiton in 1916, the institution focuses on interior design and it’s situated in the heart of New York City. The college offers three undergraduate programs and four master’s programs in interior design.
NYSID believe that “the successful design of an interior space enhances human welfare”, and the school also have a working principle that “the interior design profession assumes an important role in ensuring that spaces are functional, beautiful, safe, and healthy and built in an environmentally and socially conscientious way.”
Acceptance Rate
New York School of Interior Design admissions is quite selective with a 67% acceptance rate. Students that get accepted into the institution have an average ACT score of 19-23 or an average SAT score between 1050-1300.
New York School of Interior Design accepts about 600 students yearly. According to the NYSID website, in 2018 the college accepted a total number of 538 students (381 undergraduate and 157 graduate students). 22% of the college’s population was made up of international students from over 35 countries.
In 2017, the institution had a total number of 117 faculties and curators with a ratio of 10:1 (student: faculty). The average student age was approximately thirty and the average class size was approximately thirteen students per class.
According to NYSID, in 2016 to 2017 academic year, 98% of NYSID undergraduate students were employed or further pursuing their education in interior design for 6 months and 100% of their graduate students were employed or further pursuing their education within six months of graduation.

Master of Fine Arts (MFA) candidates pay a yearly tuition per semester basis (spring and fall) & separately for summer. Master Production Schedule (MPS) candidates pay tuition per credit basis; part-time students pay fees per 6 credits basis in a semester.
Master of Fine Arts 1 (MFA 1) candidates are mandated to take a 3-credit course (506 Experiential Learning I) in the first summer, and another 3-credit course (606 Experiential Learning II) in the second summer. Master of Fine Art 2 candidates have no required courses in the summer session

Most courses offered by NYSID require an additional fee for lab expenses, supplies, textbooks, and museum admissions. Also, note that some undergraduate courses require supplemental fees.
Final Words
New York School of Interior Design reserves the right to change the fee and tuition schedule. Accepted students who choose to attend the institution are mandated to pay a non-refundable tuition deposit to secure their place in the course of study. All tuition and fee deposits are nonrefundable.
