University Review
University of the People also known as UoPeople is a nonprofit private, distance education university. It was founded in 2009 (13 years ago). The school comprises of 56 administrative staffs and they enrolled approximately 100,000 students as of 2021.
University of the People Education Ltd is a fully owned subsidiary. It provides support services to the higher institutions. The subsidiary is registered with the Israeli Corporations Authority, and they have a branch office in Tel Aviv, Israel.
UoPeople was launched by educational entrepreneur Shai Reshef in the month of January, 2009. Although the university has no physical campus due to its nature of online distance learning. It uses a shared office in Pasadena, California as an office of admission.
The first students of UoPeople began classes in September 2009. And studied to obtain a bachelor’s degree in business administration and computer science. At that time, the school was not accredited and as such they did not charge any fees or tuition.

In February 2012, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded the University of the People a grant of $613,282 for the intention of assisting the university earn national accreditation. The university was accredited two years later for degree granting programs through the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC).
The University of Edinburgh partnered with the University of the people in 2017, so that graduates of the University of the People could complete a bachelor’s degree at University of Edinburgh.
Olympian Simone Biles became a student and a spokeswoman for the institution that same year, and she set up a scholarship fund in 2018, to provide financial aid for struggling students.
In 2020, the University of the people became a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) global education.
The university received candidate status in June 2021 with Western Association Of Schools And Colleges (WASC) Senior College and University Commission which is a regional accrediting body.
The Western Association Of Schools and Colleges states that “Candidacy indicates that the institution meets all or nearly all the Standards at a minimum level. Candidacy isn’t accreditation and does not ensure eventual accreditation”.
Also, the university is approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education. It is a regulatory body for student and consumer protection, that operates only in the state of California.
